BACKGROUND: Dyspepsia symptoms affect patient’s QoL and should be an important consideration in patients’ treatment.
AIMS: To compare QOL in heartburn dominant (HB) and heartburn non-dominant (NHB) UD patients using E and compare changes in other outcome measures (patient satisfaction, symptom frequency and severity).
METHODS: 1121 subjects (555M:566F) with UD symptoms (³1 month) were recruited from primary care and randomized (double-blind) to receive E 40 mg od (N=556) or E 40 mg bid (N=565) for 1 week; followed by E 40 mg od for 3 weeks. Non-responders (GOS>2) after 4 weeks treatment received another 4 weeks of E 40 mg od. The Quality of Life Questionnaire in Reflux and Dyspepsia (QoLRAD) was measured at 4 & 8 weeks. Other outcome measures included the Overall Treatment Effect (OTE), Satisfaction Survey (SS), Reflux Disease Questionnaire (RDQ) and Most Bothersome Symptom (MBS).
RESULTS: Both groups showed a significant improvement from baseline in the QoLRAD (table).
CONCLUSIONS: Both groups showed a significant improvement in QoL at 4 & 8 weeks with parallel changes in all other outcome measures.
TABLE: Improvement in QoL and other measures at 4 & 8 weeks.
