BACKGROUND: Colonoscopy is the gold standard for colorectal lesion screening. Pillcam colon capsule is new and less invasive technique. And it also gives diagnostic yield of screening colonic lesions.
OBJECTIVE: This pilot study was done to evaluate the feasibility, safety and quality of pillcam colon capsule.
METHODS: We recruited patients with colonic polyps who were referred to our unit for polypectomy. Patients needed to do bowel preparations for both procedures. The standard colonoscopy was performed within one week after capsule study. Reviewing of capsule study and colonoscopy were done by different physicians.
RESULTS: Three patients with colonic polyps were evaluated, mean age 55.6 years (range: 50-60), all male. The capsule reached colon with mean time of 137.3 minutes (107-155) and all capsules were excreted with mean colonic transit time of 312.7 minutes (96-493). All patients had good preparations for both procedures. For any size of polyps, capsule detected 46.1% (6/13) lesions, and colonoscopy detected 92.3% (12/13) lesions. For polyps 1-4 cms, both procedures can detected 100% (5/5) lesions. No adverse event occurred in this study.
CONCLUSION: Pillcam colon capsule was feasible, safe and give high quality of colonic images. And it can be a new diagnostic technique for colonic lesions, especially for the large lesions. Further studies are needed to do in large number of patients.
This study was partially funded by Southmedic company
