Farmer to Stanford University, Srinubabu is building a huge Online Healthcare Informatics Business

Hyderabad based Serial Entrepreneur Srinubabu’s enterprise Omics International is world’s leading open access scientific journal with over 1000 journals and growing. His current passion is to build his newest acquisition PULSUS – a 30 year Canadian Health Informatics Company as a go to destination of premium scientific content and Pharmacovigilance (Drug Safety) services.

Early Days

Born  and brought up in a village called Allena in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh Srinububabu completed his schooling in his village and shifted to Andhra University after gaining a seat on merit for doing his B.Pharma in 2000. He later did his M.Tech with specialization in Biotechnology in 2006 and was awarded Ph.D for his work on early stage identification of diabetes in 2008.

While doing his research work Srinubabu faced lot of difficulty to gain access to relevant literature as his University Andhra University did not have subscription to majority of scientific journals. To solve his immediate problem, the Gedela used travel by bus  to Hyderabad from Visakhapatnam every month, about 400 miles away from his University to access research content.

Hitting the Entrepreneurial Bug

While pursuing his Doctorate at the Andhra University Srinubabu received Young Scientist Award in 2007 from South Korea for his application of mathematical modelling for life sciences under sponsorship from Human Proteome Organisation (HUPO). During the award ceremony, Dr. Srinubabu expressed his problems of literature access. He debated that scholars from developing countries are not able to access literature there was a need for open access journal.

This is where the entrepreneurial bug bit him. He made a humble beginning with support he received from many scholors with the launch of first open access journal called as Journal of Proteomics & Bioinformatics in 2008. He also bought a domain name for 200 rupees, and made a website with help from his  few colleagues in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam and began building his company named as Omics Online Publishing (later changed to Omics International) catering to information in the fields of biology studies. He posted his first article n April 2008 for the Journal of Proteomics & Bioinformatics.

Named as Omics international - a new science, broadly the application of computation to study biology/life sciences; a name relevant to his doctoral education. Started with one journal in 2008,  Omics international now runs 1000 journals with support from 50,000 qualified scientists as editorial board members that post 50,000 articles annually in fields of medicine, technology, and engineering.

Besides its free online open journal Omics also established a robust conference division that went on to hold over 3,000 annual events across 40 more countries. He also garnered support from the healthcare industry, which regularly publishes in the company’s journals and attends its conferences, bringing Omics both credibility and the financial resources to grow.

Stint at Stanford University

During his Post Doctorate studies in Stanford University in 2008 on biomarkers for identification of early stage of cancer he mustered further support from his Stanford Alumni that helped him grow his open access journals and also bring on board qualified scientists as editorial board members to meet the industry standards.

Acquisitions

After acquiring PULSUS around the year 2016 - a 30 years old company and well established brand in America, we acquired the company and all acquired journals are running under Pulsus. Srinubabu is keen to strengthen its position in the market as a go-to-destination for premium research articles and healthcare information. The founding company in the mean time grew to 3500 employees having established its operations in Hyderabad, Chennai and in New Delhi.

Future

Srinubabu’ immediate center of attention is to grow PULSUS – into a leading online Health informatics with a sharp focus on Pharmacovigilance services providers. Pulsus will open its centre in SEZ Chennai and thereafter in Gurugram. It aims to grow to a 1000 employee company in the next couple of years from its current level of 500 people working in Hyderabad.

In Hyderabad, headquarters and his newest passion PULSUS are spread over 250,000 square feet in the Special Economic Zone buildings located in the Technology Hub. More than two-thirds among the 3500 people employed by Pulsus and Omics international are women.

By 2020 Srinubabu is planning to expand his employee base to 5,000 at upcoming one million square feet Omics international SEZ campus, Hyderabad and another 5,000 employees at Chennnai, Gurugram, Noida and Visakhapatnam.

Social Inclinations and interests

Srinubabu Gedela owns and operates a school and college for 5000 students at his home town.

Dr Srinubabu is also an investor and has made investments in several startups through Indian Angel Networks, Hyderabad Angels and Ney York Equity Forums.

An Entrepreneur

Dr. Srinubabu is a serieal entrepreneur and the recipient of “Young Scientist” award from the prestigious Human Proteome Organization at Seoul, Korea in 2007 for his pioneering research in the study on early stage identification of Diabetes. He received his Ph.D from Andhra University in 2007 at the age of 25 and has a Post Doctoral experience from Stanford University. He is also the recipient of Best Young Entrepreneur in 2015 and 2017. The group companiesOmics & Pulsus group employ more than 5,000 employees with 75% of them being womenThey work out of six SEZ units at Hyderabad, Chennai and Delhi. Going forward,PULSUS is establishing its own IT/ITeS Campuses, Life Sciences Skill Development Campus, scientific and healthcare information translation centers at Hyderabad,Visakhapatnam andNoida.

Dr. Srinubabu started his entrepreneurial journey in 2009 by founding Omics International Pvt. Ltd, with a profound vision of making scientific literature accessible to everyone on the globe free of cost, an idea which has actually borne out of the hardships he has faced while doing his Ph.D, and how the researchers from developing countries are shortchanged with the access to the extant scientific literature from around the world which has been controlled by global publishers with an iron-fist. What started as one single open access journal in 2009, the group today has grown to 1000 scientific and healthcare journals in the fields of Clinical, Medical, Engineering & Technology,Management, and Life Sciences that publishes over 50,000 scientific research articles annually.

Entrepreneurial Journey

Dr Gedela  used to travel from Visakhapatnam to Hyderabad (700 kilometers) once in a month or once in two months to get relevant litarature for his research during his doctoral studies.

Dr Gedela expressed his concern on under developed/developing countries scholars are not able to access scientific literature during his Young Scientists Award ceremony at South Korea in 2007. He told toHuman Proteome Organization (HUPO) committee, subscription based journals cost is very high, to access each article is costing about $50-57dollars. Developing countries scholars may not spend this amount to access literature.

With the support from members ofHUPO, he started his first open access journal called "journal of proteomics and bioinformatics". Most of the editorial board members are HUPO organizing committee members.

After that Dr Gedela moved to Stanford University for his postdoctoral, with the support from Stanford University Alumni the journals were increased. The open access journals content also reaching thousends of scientists across the world, Open access journals got it's momentum and reader base also increased to millions.

Omics quickly expanded its activates to International Conferences and Events. With more than 3000 Global Annual Medical and Scientific Meetings in 40 countries, the group annual meetings are dais for 200,000+ scientists for meaningful interaction and discussions where world class scientists, and business professionals deliberate their knowledge with young and aspiring scholars. As part of their spectacular growth during the last 9 years, Omics acquired several small and medium size companies in publishing and events sectors, mainly from Europe, Canada, USA and Russia. In 2016 Dr. Srinubabu acquired PULSUS Group, a highly reputed 30-year-old Canadian health informatics, medical and scientific publisher.

Today, Omics & Pulsus group employ more than 5,000 employees with 75% of them being women. They work out of six SEZ units at Hyderabad, Chennai and Delhi. Going forward, PULSUS is establishing its own IT/ITeS Campuses, Life Sciences Skill Development Campus, scientific and healthcare information translation centers at Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and Noida .

Furthering his service to the society, Dr. Srinubabu is now embarking on translating the Global Scientific Literature from English to other foreign languagesJapanese,Russian, Chinese, Germanetc. and also into Indian languages Hindi, Telugu, Guajarati, Tamil, Begali etc. Once this is completed INDIA will become global hub for knowledge and everyone in the world will have access to the rich source of Healthcare information in their local languages.
