Aquaculture and COVID-19

Why aquaculture? the world fish production faces a significant loss both in volume and biodiversity. This loss is occurring due to the combined effects of overfishing and decline of fish in its natural resources.  Is Aquaculture the Answer? yes, it is inevitable for many reasons; aquatic pollution, high FCR, jobs and income, improving the economy direct & indirect and safe & secure food. But in case of wrong practices aquaculture can do much harm than good as; habitat destruction, freshwater usage, using seeds from wild fisheries, feeding fish with fish, antibiotics and chemotherapy abuse and loss of genetic biodiversity.

So, there no alternative for the sustainability is a dynamic concept that will differ according to the difference in farming systems, the cultured species, and social and technological standards. Aquaculture system to be truly sustainable, it must have: environmental sustainability, economic sustainability and Social and community sustainability.

The lockdowns due to COVID-19 causing reduced/lost consumer demand with a significant impact, on the workforce of fish farms and in the post-harvest activities. Shortages of seeds, feeds and related aquaculture items due to restrictions on transportation and travel of personnel. The unsold live fish stocks in fish farms may increase the costs for feeding as well as greater risk of fish mortalities. Measures to contain the spread of COVID-19 have caused disruption in both domestic and international supply chains (38% of fish/seafood entering international trade).
