Aquaculture in senegal: current state, challenges and development prospects

Author(s): Hamet Diaw DIADHIOU

Aquaculture in Senegal is still underdeveloped. Its production remains low (less than 2,000 tonnes per year) while it is one of the priority areas of the country's policy to accelerate economic growth. Several factors explain this situation : the absence of aquaculture tradition in most of the geographical areas where there are real possibilities of development of the activity , the bad governance of the activity by the state body in charge of the promotion of the sector,, the lack of research in the implementation of major development projects, the need for training of stakeholders, etc. Beyond these constraints, development in Senegal needs a legal and regulatory framework to be able to attract private investors and allow national actors to access funding to conduct their activities. The delay in the adoption of this document by the National Assembly of Senegal is very detrimental to the achievement of these objectives. This communication on the situation of aquaculture in Senegal takes stock of the challenges, constraints and possibilities for developing the activity.
