Postgraduate university training is a mission of transcendental importance for societies since it is expected that the university will return to society graduates with high ethical, scientific and educational values in the field of specialization that people have chosen. Likewise, it is hoped that through that research carried out in postgraduate courses, strengthen human development by generating new scientific knowledge.

These reasons evidence that research in the postgraduate courses requires not to be just a simple task or activity of formation within the curriculum of different programs, it must be an imperative necessity and unavoidable of the disciplines. Therefore, the postgraduate in Nursing in its different specializations or emphases does not escape this requirement in training.

However, in the historical evolution that has accompanied Nursing and its participation in social contribution, in human knowledge and understanding, it is important to note that the development of nursing research has been slow. It is important to point out that small groups of nursing since the 20’s research, in those first decades the research focused on purely educational topics and in later decades, it was proposed more clinical and relevant issues with the health of individuals, families and communities inducing nurses to seek more rigorous investigative methodologies and provide support for their clinical practice.

In general, Nursing has been considered for a few decades as a science of low status and service to medicine, dealing rather with collaborating in other areas related to health. With this background, postgraduate studies in Nursing, have begun to increase research and knowledge. However, at present, this increase in research does not leave aside the fact that graduate students perceive research as an addition to the curriculum or the final requirement to obtain their certification in some universities, and therefore does not generate social impact.

Currently, it denotes the disciplinary and professional growth that is mediated by the development of high-level science and technology, made up of groups of people trained to produce and apply scientific knowledge. Graduate studies thus consolidate this growth and development of disciplines, which in addition to specializing in a professional group gives researchers the opportunity to interact with other groups in the global scientific community and participate in cooperation groups.

Scientific research allows the nursing professional to generate new knowledge to improve practical decisions and for educational researchers to propose different ways to graduate students and that this is an inescapable part of curriculum development, to encourage in the student to high motivation and awareness of the importance of the research.

Nursing postgraduate should further strengthen research by combining rigorous methodologies and stimulating the creativity of the students that bring them closer to the approach of real problems or situations to offer from the research results that lead to the social and health improvement of people. This is how Nursing will achieve high professional development and impact with a practice based on scientific knowledge.
