Adolescents Relationships With Family

Research investigating interactions between parents and teenagers in normative and clinical communities shows family members may have divergent viewpoints. Parents who have invested time and energy in sustaining cohesive family relationships are more likely to report less family problems, whereas teenagers who aspire for freedom and greater parental separation are more inclined to Have unenthusiastic views regarding family life and relationships. While these diverse family functioning perspectives may be normal, they may contribute to family discord, particularly when household dynamics are highly contradictory and disorganised. Diverse experiences can be more pronounced among families undergoing major stressors. Parents and adolescents have a unique and often divergent view of family relationships and functioning. Nevertheless, previous work has not yet examined whether the discrepancies in parent-child assessment of family functioning are focused on quantitative differences(i.e., family disparity as a ranking on a family functioning scale) or conceptual discrepancies (i.e. a divergent interpretation of the nature of family functioning as a construct).
