It's called atherosclerosis when plaque (fatty deposits) clogs the arteries. These deposits are composed of cholesterol, fatty substances, cellular waste products, calcium and fibrin (a blood coagulating material). The blood vessel wall thickens as plaque builds up. This narrows the channel inside the artery, reducing blood flow. That, in turn, diminishes the amount of oxygen and other nutrients that reach the body. Where plaque develops and where the type of artery is affected, each person varies. Plaque may partially or completely block blood flow through arteries of large or medium size in the heart , brain, pelvis, legs , arms, or kidneysPlaque itself can present a hazard. The bloodstream can break off a piece of plaque and carry it until it gets stuck. And plaque that narrows an artery also allows for the possibility of a blood clot (thrombus) adhering to the inner wall of the blood vessel.
