Essential Oils

Essential oils also are referred to as volatile oils, ethereal oils, aetherolea, or just because the oil of the plant from which they were extracted, like oil of clove. The term "essential" used here doesn't mean indispensable or usable by the physical body , like the terms essential aminoalkanoic acid or essential carboxylic acid , which are so called because they're nutritionally required by a given living organism. The antimicrobial properties of essential oils are known for several centuries. In recent years (1987-2001), an outsized number of essential oils and their constituents are investigated for his or her antimicrobial properties against some bacteria and fungi in additional than 500 reports. This methods commonly used for the evaluation of essential oils antibacterial and antifungal activities. The agar diffusion method (paper disc and well) and the dilution method (agar and liquid broth) also as turbidimetric and impedimetric monitoring of microorganism growth within the presence of the tested essential oils are described. Factors influencing the in vitro antimicrobial activity of essential oils and therefore the mechanisms of essential oils action on microorganisms are reported. This paper gives a summary on the susceptibility of human and food-borne bacteria and fungi towards different essential oils and their constituents.
